Bankhead Tunnel

Eastern entrance of Bankhead Tunnel in Mobile. The tunnel, named after a distinguished Alabama statesman, was the first engineering feat of its kind in the deep south. By reaching through the Mobile River, the tunnel reduced the distance between the city and points north and east on the Old Spanish Trail by 7 1/2 miles. Opened to traffic: February 20, 1941.
